I am in need of the benefit of your collective experience with NICU
environments. I am nearing the completion of my course work for a MS in
infant neuro-biological infant development and infant mental health and will
be selecting an internship placement soon. I am considering working in an
NICU to provide developmentally supportive care (such as Als' synactive
model). Ideally, this would involve Kangaroo care and breastfeeding the
neonate. Concurrently, I would like to accumulate the additional contact
hours so I can proceed with becoming an IBCLC. This would give me a more
medically accepted role in an NICU in the future.
I am interested to know what the climate is in the NICU. Are developmental
specialists involved, accepted, excluded, a rarity? I am feeling like there
is a real need and niche for me in the developmental specialist/lactation
role, but does it REALLY exist?
Please email me privately as I am nomail this quarter. And if you want to
read about the synactive model, let me know and I can send it in adobe PDF.
Thanks,
Joanne
