The give-away handpumps are a source of frustration for me. I *often* get
calls from mothers with newborns, telling me that they have no milk because
they used this or that handpump and nothing came out. If a mom gets a
handpump and is neither given instruction about the physiology of
breastfeeding nor how to use the pump, she is not likely to be successful.
If she thinks that milk will pour from her breasts like cow's milk from a
carton (or formula from the ready-to-feed can) , she is not likely to be
successful. Education is key.
