Interesting study mentioned on today's Medscape. The study compares how
well premature infants fared on pasteurized donor milk versus formula and
describes no significant difference. The study authors emphasize the point
that premature infants do best on their mother's own milk---a point that
did NOT come across in a report on our local news.

At any rate, the study is published in Pediatrics (116:400-406) and was led
by Dr. Richard J. Schanler, from North Shore University Hospital in
Manhasset, New York. The Medscape article is at
<http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/510161>

To quote from this article: "We found that extremely premature infants fed
pasteurized donor human milk had the same incidence of sepsis and
necrotizing enterocolitis as infants fed preterm formula, and both of these
groups had more sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis than infants fed their
own mothers' milk," Dr. Schanler said. "We did not expect these results."

Julia
