We had a Mom call a few weeks back that was inquiring about our practice of
feeding baby with ABM when mother chooses to breastfeed. It seems that her
first 2 (delivered elsewhere) were both given formula in the nursery the
first day or two while in the NICU for observation of TTN. They both were
later diagnosed with severe allergies and the second child was worse. The
physician treating him stated that having formula early on was probably the
initiating culprit. Her concern was whether we would randomly decide the
need for it with out her permission. We used this as a learning tool for
staff. Whoa...there sure could be problems down the road...that staff could
be held accountable for...and may never realize the seriousness.
