I am, as usual, several days behind in reading Lactnet, so if this has already been said, I apologize for an unintended redundancy.

Pat in SNJ and others,
The 1938 reference to dairy cows used the estimate less than one in one thousand. That says less than 0.5% for cows. He then goes on to postulate that more than 95% of mothers should be able to breastfeed, with no data to support that statement. And it became "truth". When certain authorities in certain settings hypothesize, and the hypothesizing has happened long enough ago, those statements can take on the aura of "ex cathedra" pronouncements, never to be questioned, except by extreme skeptics--you know, evidence-driven indiviuals. And who might they be? ;o)
