It is really great reading all of these metaphors. I frequently use the
driving the car metaphor. Others I have used are: Asking expectant or new
moms how long it takes them to eat a meal and if it a set time each time.
Or how would they like it if the nurses took their breakfast tray away
because their"time" was up and not take into account that they had to go to
the bathroom or the phone rang. My favorite one I just use last week with
a young couple who the mom asked me if it was ok to hold her baby alot
because her husband and his family keep telling her to let the baby cry or
it will be spoiled. The husband seemed a little slow and didn't seem too
impressed by "studies have shown that you can't spoil a baby schpiel. So I
tried...Imagine you lived all of your life in Jamaica where it is warm
everyday and people speak one language...now imagine you woke up one day
and you were in the North Pole and you didn't know where you were or how
you got there and you couldn't ask because no one understood you. Wouldn't
you be a little scared? Now imagine that you recognized one
person...wouldn't you kind of "cling" to them? Hope they would help you
tell the others what you needed until you could speak the language? Now how
would you feel if you were trying to tell this person you needed a drink
and they showed you where the bathroom was because they didn't understand
you. So you asked again in the only language you knew and then that person
left you alone. What would that teach you, would you trust that person.
Would you think you were spoiled if that person stayed by you and tried to
help you and make you feel safe? I saw a light go on in his eyes.
Barb
