I gave a talk to Gender studies post-grads and staff last year at Sydney
Uni. Copresenters were Fiona Giles (the author of the Secret Life of
Breasts) and another academic (whose name escapes me) whose area of research
was breasts in aboriginal art (a very simplified description). It was an
extremely interesting day. I understood Fiona's presentation pretty well,
I've heard her speak a few times but I only understood about 1/3 of the
words that the other speaker used and so understood just a smidgen of what
she was saying (the listeners understood though!). Conversely I am sure that
the audience did not understand what I was saying or at least the
implications of what I was saying. The differences in outlook and language
make such interactions difficult at times but I think that cross
disciplinary dialogue is valuable just the same!
Love to go to this symposium!
