Welcome, Jamie. The politics of midwifery accreditation, eh? Hang in
there.
I have heard statements about mothers being read to from manuals before,
sometimes in rather negative terms. Our reason for reading is to provide
the information directly to the mother from a reputable, primary source
rather than "off the top of our heads". That way, the mother can copy it
down to make sure she fully understands and/or remembers it, or can
quote it to her HCP, or whatever she feels she needs to do. I am an avid
reader, too, and find that sometimes I forget where I read something or
what exactly the protocol / number / name was. This is one of the
advantages of giving concise, precise info. We also find that mothers
feel reassured when they can relate to a situation that is written down,
i.e. "oh... so that happens to other mothers too!" Finally, there is an
advantage in the knowledge coming directly from a primary source rather
than from us, personally, in that we are put on a more equal ground. We
try not to give advice, recommendations, etc... I say try not to,
because sometimes I get feeling protective and maternal and end up just
telling the mom, "You know, I think you need to take the baby to bed and
try to get some rest." (Hope I don't lose my initials for telling you
that.)
I just wanted to explain a bit about "Who We Are and What We Do," as the
name of one of our pamphlets has it. Or why we do what we do. Those
founding mothers really thought of everything!
