Toby Gish's post about primates learning to bf reminds me of the story of a
zoo-raised gorilla who held her first baby firmly facing *out* to nurse.
With no concept that her instinctive embrace was supposed to involve milk
transfer, how would she know which way the baby should face? After a few
days, the baby was taken away to be hand-reared.

During her second pregnancy, the zoo hired human nursing mothers to sit
outside her cage and nurse their babies. When her second baby was born,
she held it the way she had learned to hold it, and she nursed.

It's one of my favorite nursing stories, but I don't know where I read it.
Anyone else know?
