Did she use 0.5% gentian violet solution? Around here it is available only
in 1.0% solution, so the moms have to dilute it by 1/2 with water to get the
right strength.

Did she use it just once a day? Did she dip a cotten swab into the solution
and have the baby suck on it for a few seconds to coat the inside of the
mouth, swabbing as needed to be sure cheeks, gums, tongue, roof, etc. were
purple?

I have not had problems with GV with the moms I have worked with. Overuse
or over-strength can cause mouth sores.
