Dear Friends,

It is possible to nurse with an sns and NOT sit up---Here is how it is
done:
1) have enough snses to get thru the night without cleaning or refilling
2) fill all if them before bed.
3) put into an Igloo ice chest--the kind for 6 packs, with the waffle-y
blue ice for six packs. If your house is hot, add a fllat blue ice on
top.
4) put on floor next to bed.
5) when baby wakes, take out an sns and look at the clock.
6) DO NOT put on the lariat or tape the tubes into place.
7) Wrap the sns in something if the coldness bothers you or the baby.
8) Get into position for nursing lying down
9) latch on with sns tube in baby's mouth--the exact position is not as
critical as you may think. Once the mother and baby get the hang of the
sns, the tape is unnecessary.
10) wedge the sns between mother and baby or lay it on top of baby's
side.
11) doze and feed
12) before you switch sides, glance at the clock. If it is more than
two hours since you started on this sns, discard and take a new one.

It usually takes mothers and babies a while to learn to nurse lying down
with the sns. Also, this is difficult, maybe impossible, to do with the
LACTAID (at least for me). However, it soon becomes so second nature
that the mother really doesn't need to wake up to do it, anymore than
any other mother has to wake up if she and the baby and cuddled up
together.

This works--I nursed 2 (both adopted) this way and I literally never sat
up after 11PM once they were 3 weeks old.

Warmly-
Judy Gelman, IBCLC
