Hello. I did an archive search, but need more info. I have a mom to be with
2nd child. Reduction surgery 11 years ago. Tried to breastfeed 6 weeks with
first baby, but had no information and supplemented since birth. She has been
doing a lot of research this time. Has read info on BFAR and other related
sites. At the ILCA conference there was mention of pumping before birth to
help with supply later--also to collect colostrum in case supplementation is
necessary. This mom is willing to pump before birth, but I wanted to give her
more info before she does.

How many weeks before birth should she start-she is 7 months? I mentioned
to pump only once or twice per day. Can she freeze any milk she collects to
use after birth if needed? I know this is one of those topics that has mixed
reviews. I guess what I am asking is: as an LC can I tell this mom that it is
okay to try pumping or am I stepping over the line and recommending
something that needs further study before becoming a recommended practice?

I also read in the Lactnet archives about hand expressing before birth. Would
this be a better way to provide stimulation to breasts before birth? Thanks.

Christine, IBCLC
