All behavior has meaning and Mammals are quite creative in developing
ways to improve the MER.Piglets , while swarming all over the sow, can
butt the tears and create fabulous sprays of milk. Kittens pound the
mother 's chest/abdominal wll to get milk. Goats butt the udder, etc.
Babies pull with their heads, pat with their hands, twist with fingers
as they grow older. The ages you mention could be related to growth
spurts, return to work and decreased milk supply, early introduction of
solids. Has mom been sick recently causing decreased milk? Birth control
pills? Doing a careful history with supply issues in mind can often
clarify the behavior.
