It has been stated before that BF ads showing or referring to
celebrities may not be very effective as many will say, "Sure, she
can do it. She has a housekeeper, a nanny, can take time off from
her work and still afford to live." On the other hand, some may
want to emulate their idols. Since different people react
differently, we need a multi-faceted approach. Yes, include
celebrities such as sports heros, pop music singers, politicians
(and/or the wives of such heros), but also include endorsements
form: a single mom who is about to lose her welfare benefits or who
gets no child support from the dad; an employed mom whose income
does little more than cover child care costs, but who needs every
penny she can lay her hands on; a mom who faced some challenges
getting breastfeeding off to a good start but who hung in because
she really knew it was worth it; a mom who breastfed in spite of
lack of support from her family and firends; perhaps even a mom
living on the street or in a homeless shelter.
In other words, don't concentrate on one lifestyle when using real
people to "endorse" breastfeeding. By presenting a variety, moms
can find both people they idolize as well as people facing similar
challenges to theirs who tell her breastfeeding is important and
worth any percieved challenges she may have to overcome to acomplish
it.
