Dear Jean;

Hi! Hope you are doing weLLL. I am a LLLLeader. I am also a childbirth
edicator trained in outreach "low literacy" clients. I have worked with
mothers in similar scenarios to the one you described. One of the key factors
with low literacy moms is not to have anything too hard to read. Nor too much
to read.
One suggestion that I have is to have in a basket different items that may
help get breastfeeding to a good start, specially during the first few days.
You may or may not want to have a card attached to it with some info. It
helps to have the words printed rather than cursive. Having the items without
words helps them guess and play at trying to figure out the real use, rather
than feeling intimidated by having to read something in front of their peers.
Things like a piece of fruit, to indicate diet, a glass to indicate drinking
plenty of fluids, a pillow or toy bed from a toy playhouse to indicate mom
sleeps with baby, or mom sleeps when baby sleeps.
I also add a play phone, to indicate to take phone off the hook when mom is
resting. A sling, Phone numbers of local BF Help,
The intesting thing is that moms will pick an item and they will say what they
think its use is. Often others will jump in and either "correct" the mom or
share a different use. I think you get the idea.

I have heard of another idea that seems to have worked well with other moms in
similar group situations. It is the "I CAN" can. Strips of paper that say,
in big printed letters, I Can breastfeed when..... You can add different
situations or have them add them themseves. For Example I can breastfeed
when I am out and about att he store. etc.
It is late and can't think of any examples but I think you get the idea. I
hope these help.
