In my opinion, the weaning process has started too soon for this infant. And
mother's production is lower than he's liking and needing. He is not nursing
at night, that is one way to help, wake him at least once during the night.
Is he kept very close to mother 24/7? That would also be key.
It seems he is eating quite alot of foods for 5 months old. This will make
mom's production go down, of course. (I agree with someone who recently said
she uses the words "milk production" and not "milk supply." I've also
started to say it that way).
I would reinforce to mother that she was able to get her production going in
the past by plenty of nursing and some additional pumping. I would suggest
she do the same this time, and cut the solids down quite a bit. If she
begins to use formula in the evening, that would be a sure way to complete
the weaning process prematurely.
