Marie,
I have had a spate of moms who bought Pump in Styles prenatally come for
a consult for breast refusal, engorgement, whatever, and be very
resistant to renting a hospital quality pump. I find this interferes
with solving the breastfeeding problem. I am particularly concerned with
the impression that these women have that this is a hospital quality pump
and that they will never need anything else. Someone has done them a
disservice. Several clients have told me that they have returned PNS's
to Medela for repairs (after a few weeks use). I'm glad that I resisted
the impulse to jump on the bandwagon and sell this gizmo.
An Ameda-Egnell exec told me that they make very little money on
pump rentals to depots, but make most of their profit on the kit sales.
Perhaps this is true of Medela as well, which could answer why they are
selling a product that competes with their rental pumps. Too bad there
is not more concern for their depots.
