Re: mother feeling baby is hers

I only recently joined this list because I am interested in becoming a
lactation consultant, though I probably won't be able to actively
pursue this for some time.

I wanted to post, though, to say that though having a cesarean is not
ideal it does not always - or probably even usually - cause such
feelings in a mother and also does not necessarily have to have a
negative impact on breastfeeeding. I am sure in your capacities,
these are the types of women you have seen but there are a lot of
people (me included) who have had c-sections and have easily bonded
with the child and had good nursing experiences.

I think it is important to emphasize to pregnant mothers that though a
natural birth is ideal, not having one is not necessarily a "bad
start" that will impact the mom/baby relationship. I had an emergency
c-section with my first child and didn't get to nurse for over 7 hours
after my baby was born. He nursed like a champ, but one of the
reasons I was a wreck during the time after birth was that I had been
told so many times "you have to get the baby to nurse as soon as
possible" in order for him to nurse that I was going crazy thinking
that I had to have the baby right away or he wouldn't nurse.

My message is to make sure there is not too much pressure on pregnant
moms (from family members, LCs, midwives, drs or the media) that
everything has to go the "right" way during/post birth for things to
work out well for both mom and baby in the long run.
