I work is a small community hospital where a small group of the 'old
guard nurses" have done everything in their power to NOT change. We
still have a separate nursery nurse and postpartum nurse!! They say
outright that they DO NOT WANT TO BE BABY FRIENDLY!!!
This week a Mom said, on admission, that she was going to breast and
bottle feed her infant. For some reason she thought that she couldn't
feed her baby until the milk came in-it was two days before someone
finally realized that she wanted to breastfeed at all. I firmly believe
if one nurse was taking care of both of them this would not have
happened. I plan to use this error to push harder for couplet care.
Wish me luck!! We are looking for a new director now,( Any of you
wonderful people want to move to beautiful southern N.H.) and have a
new VP of nurses whose first order of business is to "fix OB" . It
should be an interesting year. k.

Jane
