<I am one of the directors of Lactation Education Consultants, a group of
three that teach a lactation consultant preparation program.   We are the
"on-site program arm of Breastfeeding Support Consultants" -- BSC is
doing
only distance education; LEC is now doing all the on-site
programming....same
folks, same program....OK -- you get the drift.

Since 1993 when we (BSC) corporately decided to follow ILCA standards and
not
offer a "certification" after our program (at that time BSC only did
distance
ed), we have not.  And LEC is the same...no certification for our
program.>

<I guess the question
is, will LEC/BSC decide that credibility/following ILCA standards are
more
important, or getting people into our progam...  One would like to think
that
it is the  former, but the latter buys the peanut butter.... Is it the
quality of the program that people come for, or is it the intials
conferred?
Let me know!  Perhaps we'll go for the peanut butter.....>

Bravo for you and your LEC colleagues Jan. I think the income-generating
point hits the bullseye! But I hope you are not too addicted to the
peanut butter, because economic forces, I wonder how many others do/will
opt for your high ethical standard?

In particular, I think this may influence hospital administrative people
who know far more about their bottom line and generating attractive PR
than they know about breastfeeding!
