I got a call from the hospital "lactation specialist" on Friday who said that
out hospital is going to pursue Baby Friendly. Ha Ha!! She was serious. This
is the hospital which showed a baby getting a bottle on a poster promoting
the Birth Center at a display at the Maternity Fair last week. This is the
hospital which showed the first baby born on Mother's Day sucking away on a
pacifier just hrs after birth. This is the hospital which refuses to hire an
IBCLC. This is the hospital who refuses to utilize my services for
inservices and instead sends their staff to a 2 day breastfeeding educator
workshop so they can counselor bfing moms. The same hospital where 2 babies
that I am working with was taken off bfing at 24 hrs postpartum due to
jaundice and put on ABM. The same hospital which delivers all those babies
who get bottles and then I have to deal with helping mom get over nipple
confusion.
Now how Baby Friendly does this sound?
The scarier part is that this hospital I am sure can put on a real good show.
How does the Baby Friendly certification process know for sure the facility
isn't just putting on a show?
Also, this hospital wrote a huge article on Bfing, A Mother's Gift for
Mother's Day in our local newspaper. In a side box, I was listed as
breastpump rentals with a phone # only . No name or credentials. No mention
of private practice, consults, inserivces, classes etc. And they made mention
and had a photo of the Bfing classes which is taught by the
nurses/breastfeeding educators.
If you want to see the article go to www.reflector.com.

Have a great spring day!

Barbara Whitehead, IBCLC
( who has the cleanest house in town, having been cleaning and tossing away
stuff for a week! There is 14 bags of trash on the curb awaiting pickup. This
after the yard sale and the truck load for the Salvation Army!)
