Re nitrous oxide -- I had dental work done when nursing a young child a
while back and oral surgeon said nitrous oxide was okay -- no residual once
the effects wear off. From my pre-children scuba diving days, I expect
(though don't know for sure) that it's the same sort of mechanism as what
causes nitrogen narcosis which also has no lasting effect once the partial
pressure of nitrogen is reduced. From a chapter by Peter Bennett (Duke
University Med Center) on Inert Gas Narcosis: Nitrogen is an inert gas --
it doesn't interact biochemically in the body, but rather the mechanism is
biophysical in nature (interferes with the electricochemical mechanisms
necessary for the transfer of the electrical potential across the synaptic
gap of central synapses).
