mothers wean because they believe formula will make their babies sleep longer.
well, it does! but i recall reading that nursemaids at the turn of the century
often either gave laudanum to their charges or held the babies up to the
(unlit)gas jets (when gas lights were used) to cause them to sleep for long
periods of time. i can't see much difference in using ABM the same way.

a mother should not be making an uninformed choice - but it is indeed very
difficult to fight the "convenient baby" approaches so common these days.
