"We have a mother who delivered a few weeks ago that
we are currently following on the phone, not so much
for breastfeeding help but for moral support. . . .
To complicate matters, she has to move to Fort
Campbell Kentuckey where she has no support and
doesn't know very many people. I am trying to find
some sort of support group for her as well as an IBCLC
that she can contact with problems or concerns."

Ellen,

To my ear this mother is begging for a LLL meeting. I
took a peek at the LLL of Kentucky listings and there
is a listing for a monthly meeting at Blanchfield Army
Community Hospital. Take a look at the La Leche
League International web site, go to Groups in the US,
then select Kentucky.

Any nursing mother who is interested in meeting other
nursing mothers should certainly be referred to LLL
meetings. It’s a great way to feel at home in a new
place, even if the new place is in your mind. A woman
might contact LLL if she’s having (or has had) a first
baby, is nursing for the first time, wants to nurse
longer or differently with her next (or new) baby, or
just plain wants to meet other nursing mothers. Some
areas have more than one local meeting so I often
suggest mothers attend different meetings to see if
one group of moms just “clicks.” I also suggest
visiting the same group a second time because
different mothers may attend. It’s also fun to take a
friend, sister, or baby’s visiting grandma. (In my
local group, mothers love to have a visiting grandma.
It's also helpful if current breastfeeding thinking is
news to Grandma.)

I hope others will think to recommend LLL meetings to
mothers who need support for the greater picture of
the nursing mother's life.
