I'm looking for any kind of information about this subject. I'm an RN who works in our in-hospital breastfeeding clinic with IBCLCs. Myself and one of our LCs saw a patient in consult today who is 36 weeks pregnant and has been diagnosed with gigantomastia. The rapid growh started in her second trimester, she is a petite woman who's gone from a C cup to an I. This is her first pregnancy. She presented to hospital with symptoms of mastitis and is being treated with IV antibiotics. Some symptoms are resolving (redness, fever, chills) but others haven't really changed, like the edema. They are very hard to the touch. Her skin hasn't ulcerated yet, however she has some weepy areas. She has indicated a desire to breastfeed and we have been trying to find out just how possible this might be for her. We are not able to find much info besides Cheri Casciola's article, and journal articles about surgery postpartum. Diana West and Nancy Mohrbacher sent some info along to us as well. We are concerned about even further growth once she delivers and what may happen when her milk transitions in. We got a physiotherapist on board today who specials in lymphedema as well. Any info is appreciated.
