The question regarding attendance at educational offerings sponsored or
funded by Nestle or other Code violators is one faced by many of us very
frequently every year. While it is not a strict Code violation to attend
such an offering it calls into question what it means to Nestle (or any
other Code violator) to see IBCLCs attending their educational events. We
all know that Nestle is not a benevolent charity and gives lots of money to
effect what is called image transfer and project the appearance of a good
corporate citizen. This money really buys brand loyalty, is used as a means
of deflecting attention away from its unsavory behavior, and allows Nestle
to state that it provides "wonderful" education for IBCLCs. Essentially you
lend your good name, reputation, and credential to Nestle when you attend
their sponsored functions. These educational offerings are one large
commercial and it is always sad to see IBCLCs suckered into speaking at
something like this.

My philosophy is just say no to "disease promoting corporations" who ally
or associate with entities of good reputation in order to bolster their
image and reduce their offensiveness. We can also inform entities like
Stanford why we are not attending and ask that they refrain from accepting
sponsorship from Code violators in the future.
