I was hoping that I could get the input from you ladies and gents here on
LACTNET about a project that ProMoM.org is working on in conjunction with
breastfeedingisnormal.org <http://breastfeedingisnormal.org>. I do have a
vested interest in this since I'm the Executive Director for ProMoM (but I
make no money off of it whatsoever...we're all volunteers).
As most of you know, ProMoM has a section for 3 Minute Activist letters to
send out to companies, individuals, etc that we feel have done a great job
(or a not-so-great-job) promoting the benefits of breastmilk. One of our
members came up with an idea that I've seen tossed around here for the last
few days to get a 3MA letter up to send to the AIM companies requesting
(demanding?!) that they continue to supply formula fed babies with Ready to
Feed formula (specifically encouraging them NOT to send powdered formula).
Once the letter is posted, we've also created press releases for the
national media outlets.
Our quandary is this, we WANT to make sure that we are promoting
breastfeeding. It's what we do. But we want to get the word out that there
that the manufacturers of AIM have contributed significantly to the use of
formula in our country and that they need to take responsibility for the
babies of the parents that have been guided to use their product.
I've seen a few mentions here lately that some organizations say the worst
thing to do in situations like this is to send formula. So what are these
babies to do? Most of them have never been breastfed, and a great many of
these parents won't attempt to relactate.
What do you think? Are we in a catch-22, choosing the lesser of two evils?
Is there something that I'm missing here about why we shouldn't be sending
this letter out?
I respect all of you so much for what you do and the knowledge that you
possess as individuals and as a group. Any advice that you would like to
give in this situation would be greatly appreciated either here or off-list.
 Sincerely,
Carrie Patterson
Executive Director
ProMoM.Org
