Karen,

Why in the world would the Charge Nurse feel that these needed to be
sterile? Do they share them between babies? I think not. Does she make the
moms sterilize their pump parts? Washing in hot soapy water should be
sufficient (we used castile soap), but any dish soap without fragrance
should be fine. I doubt that you could sterilize the SNS without melting
that fine/small feeding tube, however, if they absolutely MUST, Medela does
have those little microwave/sterilize bags they might try. I still don't
know how the tubing would tolerate that.

Good luck, NICU is nearly always (IMHO) not terribly supportive of
lactation.

I am trying to introduce SNS in our local NICU. The Charge Nurse is worried
about the sterilising of these units inbetween feeds. She feels they may
pose an infection control risk. Can others tell me what they do in their
units.

As an aside, I wish they were more worried about the dummies that sit in
babies cots for days on end!
