I think your two posts are related. I think we are seeing so many babies with TT due to a combination of poor maternal nutrition and environmental factors (even a great diet cannot assure absorption when toxins interfere--but let's be honest, most American women have pathetic diets). I also think we are seeing so many breastfeeding problems for the same reasons.
I think the TT issue is one of dealing with the upstream problem--I believe women need to detoxify before having babies (and so do their partners). And they need to clean up their diets--not just eating a little healthier--whatever than means--but eliminating everything that is not food and eating only real food. The environmental burden is just too great and our bodies cannot overcome it. And I think younger women are more at risk, bc their world and their bodies were poisoned from infancy.
I address ongoing nipple/breast problems with nutrition, homeopathy and supplements. For example, treating vitamin D and mag deficiency alone can resolve Reynauds. Moms should not be combatting yeast or anything else--her body should. You can fire all the ammunition you want at a virus, bacteria or fungus, but unless mom can take over from there--she is nowhere. What is she doing to change the internal terrain? In my mind, that is the real question.
As to frenotomy--I am lucky to have worked with best and kindest docs out there for TT babies--Betty Coryllos, Scott Seigel, Larry Kotlow and Cliff O'Callahan, but it goes against everything I believe about the newborn period to subject babies to trauma. Yet, I recommend the revisions, bc you cannot fix these other problems after the fact. And, yes, I believe there is a genetic factor, but only that it is epigenetic in nature--the environment is driving the outcome and always has been. Otherwise, genetics would mean a far greater determination than predisposition than we see.

Subject: So many babies with tongue ties

I am noticing more and more breastfeeding issues are the results of any 4-5
of the various tongue ties that are out there. It is now the first thing I
do when examining the baby. Some of the time I see a tie and mom and baby
are doing great! Or on occasion, a few weeks time the issue resolves. But
most of the time I refer out to an oral surgeon after examination of both
mom and baby and the results are amazing!!! I feel that breastfeeding is
natural and should be helped in natural ways but I feel a conflict of
interest if I send my babies to the oral surgeon when I see the posterior
ties causing problems. Is there anything else you guys do to help a mom and
baby transition into easier breastfeeding without a frenectomy? Many of the
babies I see are posterior and that is why the moms find me because no one
else knows how to fix their continual sore nipples, or recurrent mastitis,
or under supply issues or baby has a suck, swallow and breathe issue without
success until a frenectomy is recommended by me. Some moms and dads choose
not to have a frenectomy even though I explain the options of both sides in
detail it is still their choice. If I am seeing significant results with a
frenectomy does that mean the baby truly needed it? I just feel that sending
them to an oral surgeon however extremely helpful it has been, can I be
doing something else to help in a less invasive way? Just wanted to hear
your thoughts.

Subject: yeast, nipple infection, sucking issues

I have a mom who can really use some extra information. Permission to post.
Mom stated that she has systemic yeast and diflucan makes her really sick
even though she has a prescription for 2 pills. She also has Raynaulds
because right after the baby came off the breast, it turned completely
white. She has had persistent sore, cracked and at times bleeding nipples
for 10 weeks now. She had pain using a nipple shield so she has D/Ced that.
Also more painful using a pump. I have suggested Dr. Newman's All Purpose
Nipple Ointment because of her risk for more yeast. There was alot of
birth trauma to this 10 week old baby and mom states they live at the
chiropractor. I have sent them to one of my doctor friends and baby has
slight torticollis and suggested she continue with CST and chiropractor
work. Mom c/o shooting burning pains up into her arm pits. And now bleeding
nipples since the baby had a second posterior frenectomy. Any suggestions of
what she can do to combat the yeast without going to diflucan? What do we do
about her Raynaulds other than heat after a feed? She is going to breastfeed
regardless of the pain. The only true success with this baby in 10 weeks was
finally able to transfer milk using a shield after his first frenectomy and
gained weight for the first time. Second success was getting him off the
shield and mom experienced less pain at nipples. Now she not only has sore
bleeding nipples that are worse after the second frenectomy but had mastitis
last week. She treated her mastitis with herbs and had success with it. I
know there is a lot of issues going on...persistent sore nipples, shooting
pain in breasts, mastitis, I am sure a nipple infection, yeast and
Raynaulds. She is over whelmed but truly wants to do it even though alot of
issues are stacking against her. Any information would be appreciated.
