Kathy Dettwyler, I thank you for the beautiful story you wrote!!!! I can't
beiieve how any time I have a problem it is a current topic of disscussion on
Lactnet!!!!! I am working with a wonderful family that has a little girl
with Down's . Mom rented a pump and pumped exclusively for 6 weeks until
Tessa decieded at 6 weeks that she would begin to nurse. She has been nursing
for 4 weeks now' but just had a weight check and has not gained in 4
weeks!!!! She needs to have heart surgery soon and needs to gain wt. I
suggested breast massage, pumping off the foremilk and letting her nurse to
get the hind milk and an sns. Do you have any other ideas??? Pedi has mom
feeding 30 minutes on one breast at each fdg, mom has tried that for 1 1/2
wks and Tessa actually lost 1 ounce. Also any other info you have would be
most appreciated. This is baby #4 and she is a special blessing to her
family. In nicu we usually don't let premies take more than 20 -25 minutes
to complete a fdg. The Doc's feel they burn more calories than they take in
after that. How do you feel about that???? TIA
