I was just speaking with a woman yesterday who called about hiring me as a
postpartum doula. She's having a scheduled cesarean almost two weeks before
her due date, all because her doctor said she'd never be successful at VBAC.
OK, bad enough. Then, she tells me that she will not be breastfeeding this
baby because her first breastfeeding experience was thoroughly unsupported
and she gave up after five weeks of misery. But, she said, I wanted to talk
to my pediatrician before I chose not to breastfeed this child.

Can you guess what the pediatrician said? "Actually I am relieved that you
will not be breastfeeding. I just had two cases this week where breastfed
babies had to be readmitted to the hospital, one for jaundice and one for
insufficient nutrition."

Relieved?? I was in shock. Not only is this mom facing sorry care from an
equally sorry OB, but she's also being encouraged not to breastfeed by the
very professional that should have her baby's best interest in mind.

Does this brick wall ever get any softer?
