Recently, a neonatologist came to me to discuss a preemie in our nicu.
Baby had episode of loose stools that turned to bloody stools this week.
Twin of this child also had loose stools that resolved without incident.
Baby with bloody stools ended up needing a tranfusion this week. Mom has
been taking Mother's milk tea to boost supply. Neonatology had reference
that the aniseed in this tea can cause a coumadin effect and this is what
they are attributing blood in stool to. Mother is of course a wreck
because she is a devoted pumper. Has anyone ever had this occur?? I have
plenty of mom's using this tea and never have had bloody stools.

Also, our Maternal infant division is looking into a policy that will
forbid mothers who are of unknown HIV status at delivery to breastfeed
until status is known via blood test after delivery. They are citing AAP
guidelines.....I have read the guideline myself and feel it stresses
importance of telling mothers of unknown status the risks of HIV being
transmitted via breastmilk. Can we as a hospital forbid this?? I'm
thinking of the mom who refuses HIV testing or our transports that arrive
on the weekend who we cannot get documentation from MD offices until
monday........They are also implementing a policy that will force us to
supplement babies if sugars are less than 60!!! currently our cutoff is 40-
---Not having a good day in the political muddy waters of hospital
policies. Interestingly enough, Lactation was never even approached for
input into either of these policies. We have been told more than once by
our administrator that this is a "fluff" job to keep the patients happy.
Guess they have proved their point today.....Beth Giovenco RNC,IBCLC

Who keeps trudging along for the pure joy of saving one child from getting
diabetes like my 5 yr old son who had to endure countless blood tests and
shots , and for the one mother who falls in love with breastfeeding enough
to be able to enjoy the nursing relationship with a toddler as much as i
have. Mom to Ryan 5,(who gets a couple ounces of breastmilk each morning
to fight the winter bugs) and Jack 2 1/2 who now can say milk please
mama........
