On Thursday, I noticed an article in the news titled "Images Show a Snub Is
Really Like a Kick in the Gut". You can read it here:
http://tinyurl.com/qdkw

This seems to reinforce the idea that being non-responsive to an infant can
cause the baby physical pain. I've tried to find an abstract of the article
but didn't get very far. Nor did this information receive more than passing
attention in the news.

The original research paper, and a "Perspectives" article about it,
appear in the 10 October 2003 issue of the journal Science,
http://www.sciencemag.org/. While the magazine offers a lot of
interesting material on-line, the current issues are by subscription
only, though individual articles can be purchased. You may be able to
read the journal through a local library, university or medical institution.

The article isn't saying that emotional pain causes physical pain, but
that the responses are processed in similar regions of the brain.
