I find that it is common for Moms to experience discomfort of varying degrees
during the first 30 seconds of latch with the discomfort subsiding. (I did
have this experience myself as well with my nurslings) The nipple/areola is
being drawn (ideally) further into the baby's mouth with each suck, to be
finally positioned in the region of the soft palate where it will not be injured.
Nipple sensitivity is an individual feeling and can range from minimal to
extreme. This situation could be related to nipple sensitivity, oral anatomy of
the individual baby (which may not be a factor with this new baby) and the
baby's willingness to open mouth wide and latch farther back onto the areola
resulting in less pulling of the nipple to get it into place. I would advise this
Mom to encourage a wide open mouth and to point the nipple down towards the
back of the throat to facilitate the nipple getting back far enough with each
suck and minimize the transient discomfort. (My two cents)

another time)
