Esther,
It is interesting to know that the study you participated in found that
breastmilk had a higher fat content from moms who were breastfeeding over one year
versus moms who were breastfeeding 2-4 months. (older studies show the
opposite--fat content less after a year and first time mothers having higher fat
content) Although, one of the main problems in using a comparison of human milk
fat among mothers is that this component is one of the most variable
components. This component varies from woman to woman, day to day, feed to feed. Thus
there is alot of difficulty in making a true comparison. This is the issue I
have with many of the toxin studies and with research on DHA levels around
the world. How a researcher approaches this problem is crucial and will effect
the interpretation of the results.

I am truly sorry to hear that this research will be used to show that
prolonged breastfeeding may lead to unwelcome outcomes and may increase
cardiovascular risks in adulthood. I suppose the ironic thing about this is that there are
US patents that are using human milk components to correct arteriosclerosis
in adults. For example several patents are using human bile salt-stimulated
lipase to treat arteroslerosis as well as for weight control. So in my opinion
there is an economic reason to present studies that discredit breastfeeding,
particularly in the area of cardiovascular disease. I do believe that the
combined infant formula, pharmaceutical, supplement, and dairy industries have
enormous sources of funds, ties with researchers and the media that make it
relatively easy to present biased research as fact. And all these industries have
an economic interest in using human milk components--real or genetically
engineered. These industries in the past have used members of our profession to
enrich and enhance their market positions. I am really sorry that this has
happened to you.
