I'm a few days behind reading but I'm surprised that the Academy of Bfing
Medicine Protocol has not been mentioned. (I'll post the website from work in
few hours) I'm using that to begin some discussion with our physicians. Dr.
Gartner is visiting IL next week and I've got him coming to "discuss"
jaundice; maybe I'll ask him about this, too. '-)
My argument is that colostrum has 58 k/cal per oz compared to formula and
even if baby gets a very small amount of colostrum, it's going to affect
blood sugar in a positive way. I've had several babies with a "boarderline"
accucheck under 40 and 5 min at the breast gave them a 70+. Besides, babies
are supposed to have lower blood sugar in the first 24 hours!
