I find that people who work for formula companies do not allow
themselves to believe that there are significant risks to using
formula. Cognitive dissonance (the horrible feeling you get when you
act contrary to your beliefs) would make them crazy if they did.
Human beings are eminently capable of filtering evidence, and only
noticing and believing what already fits our preconceived notions. (We
know this from jury research-this is why lawyers work so hard to try to
find jurors who haven't already made up their minds.) Filtering is one
way that scientists who *should* be objective get trapped. Culture also
shapes our thought patterns, there are some things that just feel
completely normal to us, that we never even question. How about all the
research we have on infant behaviour that is totally invalid because the
infants were observed in isolation of their natural environments- their
mother's bodies!
Add in the motivation to make a good living and be respected as
"successful" in a materialistic culture, and you've got a deck stacked
against the truth, without any need for malice at all. It's when the
evidence begins to become overwhelming and people still act against the
public good that self-delusion ends and true evil creeps in.
