<< Hi - I was wondering about omega-3 supplementation. I've searched
the archives and Hale, but can't find a definitive answer about how
much is too much for a breastfeeding mother. I have recently seen two
moms whose midwives prescribed 4000 mg of fish oil>>

Excellent. It's really only correcting a fatty acid imbalance in our
modern diet.

<<other than advising them to read labels carefully to avoid heavy
metal toxicity>>

With the exception of wild salmon oil, and two other minor exceptions
all of the currently available fish oil in the united states is
molecularly distilled and by definition free of heavy metals or other
contaminants.

<<supplementsI was unable to discern if this dose would be dangerous
for the nursing baby. >>

More likely it's excellent for the nursing babies.

It'd be better if we were all eating a diet with optimal Ù-3 to Ù-6
ratios but very few are willing to and even fewer actually do.

I'd love to see all moms optimizing D and EFA ratios prenatally,
during pregnancy and on into the future.

Best,
Katherine
