Just need to clarify a 7 week old below birth weight? 3.2 at birth now
3.15? This baby needs food now! Did the feeding assessment include a pre
and post weight? Was the baby's growth plotted on a growth chart? Until
this baby gains and gets to where it needs to be it is going to suck funky.
which does not drive milk production. Baby must have a supplement. I
usually calculate supplement based on amount of milk transfered +
supplement calculated on a range of 100-120 kcal/kg/day divided by # of
feeds per 24 hours. How to feed this baby = anyway you can get food down.
My suggestions for a baby at this point is 1. Get the work of feedings
done in about 45 min. (Breast Play + supplement + maternal breast milk
expression) 2. Then dessert is on the breast and then the family rests
together until the next feed. If If read correctly mom was fairly sick post
partem, is she a candidate for any *galactogogues? *
Good luck,
Karen Querna, RN, BSN, IBCLC
