Dear Lactnet friends,
Would any of you who have utilized hindmilk to promote increased weight gain
in premies please send me any helpful particulars about the process you use
to do this? I found a few references to this idea in articles in the
newsletter from the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and in the recent Peds
in Review articles. However, our neonatal nurse practitioner wondered if
"pouring off the thinner foremilk" might also cause an inbalance in the other
nutrients in the milk.

In our SCN, we are caring for premie twins who were born at 31 weeks. They
are both nursing at the breast and test weights show their intake to be
between 35 and 45 gms (on average). However, mom is only present for two
nursings a day. At other feeds, one little girl receives her supplement
(exclusive breastmilk) by OG and the other little girl by bottle. Their
weekly weight gain has been 3-4 ounces.

Any references or pointers on the process of decanting the hindmilk would be
much appreciated.
