A client called me today as her pediatrician has told her not to breastfeed
her 9mo old while side-lying as this is what caused her baby to have an ear
infection at age 3 months. The baby has had only that one infection. She
would love to nurse the baby in bed at night but is afraid it will cause her
baby to have another ear infection. I have never heard of this before but
told her I would check with other LC's for advice. She breastfed 2 other
children in bed and they never had a problem with ear infections. I have
heard of a few pediatric nurses telling patients not to feed side-lying for
the same reason, so thought I had better check on this information. I feel
they are getting confused with the recommendation not to put a baby to bed
with a bottle of formula as there is a risk for dental carries and ear
infections.
