Bonny,
I second the statement that mom should be supported in her pumping and the
maintenance of the milk supply. Moms I have worked with have been able to
maintain a complete milk supply for babies that were never able to go to
the breast - for a full year - given the support, reason and determination.
Each mom knows what her limits are - it is not up to us to tell her "it's
too hard". We can only tell her what needs to be done and let HER decide
if she can. (This I have learned from these extraordinary women.)

So give her the reasons to pump and give breast mik in whatever method
seems to be most possible for her - haberman, SNS, cup (Sandra Lang's video
shows a baby with a very deep cleft cup feeding), or whatever is decided
once the device is placed. The baby with a cleft lip and palate whose mom
did pump NEVER had an ear infection or any upper respiratory tract
infection, something his doctors marveled at. He received breast milk for
a full year via pumping and normal bottle feeding. His surgeries had to be
delayed due to having Pierre Rubin syndrome on top of the cleft
complications, which made the surgeons very cautious about early surgery
due to the possible swelling in an already too-small throat.
