Almost all mothers that I see have been taught the cross cradle hold in the
hospital here. If the baby is latching well, I always encourage them to try
other positions soon as this hold won't last them for more than a few weeks.
It becomes quite uncomfortable (as described in Mothering) as the baby
grows. If the baby is pulling off repeatedly, I help them try the cradle
hold. Often the change helps, even when the mom's hand was properly placed
on the baby's shoulders. Maybe some babys feel more secure. I haven't seen
anyone use this hold for a second baby if breastfeeding went well the first
time.

I received my new Mothering today and as I read the letters to the editor, I
was surprised to find four letters opposed to the use of this position.

In my own practice, I find this position helpful for early feedings, but
also show the mom how to change over to the cradle hold once baby is latched
well, if she desire to change positions.
