Yesterday we played another game(during WBW it was "Breastfeeding
Jeopardy")
This game was like Family Feud, where the participants had to come up
with the same 10 answers that Carol Olsen and her colleague came up with
in Staten Island, NYC-the 10 top reasons women on Staten Island DON'T
breastfeed!
A guy won the game! But I doubt that his girl friend will breastfeed. One
girl wrote on her breastfeeding survey (which all the moms have to
complete at the start of the class) that its better for the baby "but I
ain't going to do it"...another girl wrote in answer to the question:
what do you think of breastfeeding" "I don't like it"!!!!BUT-they did pay
attention, and everyone wanted to win the adorable stuffed toy.
.
The information was taken from a wonderful newspaper article in the
Staten island Advance (the local SI newspaper) on "Breast Milk
Shortage"-why women don't breastfeed...The article also had photos of the
La Leche League picnic, and a wonderful graphic on the physiology of
breastfeeding, along with info about the milk of other mammals being
specific for them. The only downside of this article was the closing
line, which said (to paraphrase) that anything that causes gas in the
mother will naturally cause gas in the baby and should be avoided.

Fun and games at WIC....
