Dear ones,

Have any of you heard of this -- or had any experience with a mom diagnosed
w/ such that went on to have a successful breastfeeding experience?

It is an inflammation of the pituitary (in this case) of unknown origin that
is rare, but when it occurs, happens in women having their first baby. The
mother in question developed it in her 7th month w/ her first baby, but
wasn't diagnosed until the baby was about a year old. She attempted to
breastfeed and had zero milk -- zilch, none, despite pumping, Reglan,
excellent lactation assistance (not me) from our hospital lactation
consultants.

She is still on Prednisone 5 mg/day. Her daughter is 2 1/2, and she just
birthed twin boys (conceived naturally). Her ACTH and Cortisol levels are
still below normal. A prolactin level was done shortly after birth --
hopefully we'll have the results of that tomorrow -- if it is low, I've
suggested repeating it at 30 to 40 hours postpartum when it should be
spiking. She's felt completely normal for the last year and a half. But the
jury is still out on whether or not now that the inflammation of the
pituitary has receded, if prolactin will be forthcoming or not. And since
cortisol plays a role in milk production, if that is below normal -- what
will that mean?

Any ideas?
