Dear All,

A friend of mine has put the following up on a very busy internet site.
It's linked to no 1 on "Whats new on the PPP", so will be high profile for
a while:
www.primal-page.com/ (Scroll down to article on preventing SIDS with
pacifiers).

I have managed to get him to modify some of it, but have not
succeeded in getting the article down. This man never married, has no
children, do knowledge of breastfeeding, and is in his late 70s.

Following a traumatic birth in which he felt "overstimulated" he became
"touch avoidant", so I can understand why the idea of being breastfed
might trigger an avoidant reaction in him, and make him conclude that
sucking dummies, breasts and thumbs is just a "tranqulilzer" for the
baby, and prevents SIDS for that reason. (As I pointed out to him,
sucking dummies or thumbs, doesn't produce milk!)

But arguing that, is not going to get through to him, so I am trying to
work on him logically. See my email to him below:

Dear John,

A little for for your interest.

As far as I know, the studies that showed that fewer babies died when
sucking dummies, showed that these babies slept "more lightly", and it
is during "deep sleep" that SIDS occurs.

Doing co-sleeping and especially "family bed" where the infant sleeps
with the mother, *also* results in the baby sleeping more lightly and
makes breastfeeding through the night more probable.

I will check with Lactnet on the accuracy of the "light
sleep issue". What is below shows that in Japan "a family bed
country", SIDS is low, and when they emigrated to the USA a "make
your baby sleep alone" country, their SIDs rate goes up to match that of
the USA.

Will try to find out more.
Pat

Lactnet Folks,
Can you give my as much information as possible on the "light sleep"
part of this debate, and has it been proven to be the only variable?
That would help me lots. I am also taking this issue up with the
mainstream parenting magazine that I write for, so any help you can
give me will be very valuable.

Thanks anyone who can help.

Pat, Cape Town, CCE
