Thanks for the story, Gail!
A coworker shared a story last night about a postpartum mom readmitted with
endometritis who was breastfeeding and was prescribed Trovan (an
antibiotic). With the help of our pharmacist and Dr. Hale's latest edition,
she determined that Trovan wasn't the best choice for this breastfeeding
mom, who then refused to take it when she was told she'd have to "pump and
dump". When this nurse told the mom's doc about the incompatibility with BF
and the mom's reaction, the doc angrily said something to the effect of
"well let her take NOTHING", and left it at that. This nurse was
FLABBERGASTED, and had quite a challenge charting his response. I thought
she'd appreciate your "LGMFM" story-- do you mind if I shared it with her?
This scenario gives everyone a feel for what we're up against at our
facility-- frustrating! But I know that with a gentle but persistent
approach, we may be able to improve things with time... I'm going to keep
trying.
Thanks to everyone--
Cyndi, RN
