Hi,

I just witnessed a lovely story today. My cousin and his wife called me
to accompany them to the birth of their first child, so that I would be
there with them for her first nursing. This morning they called to say
she was already at the hospital, with strong contractions and so on, so
I drove over there. The birth was not going very well (contractions
slowed by epidural, then strengthend artificially with pitocin, etc,
etc) and so as not to go into those (usual) details, I will say that it
ended in a c-section (as is very usual).
The father and I were waiting in the mom´s room while the c-section was
going on (fathers not allowed to watch). However, he had insisted that
the baby be brought to him and not taken to the nursery (or nest, as
they call it here) right after birth. As soon as the babe was delivered
she was swathed and brought to us. I promptly made the dad take off his
shirt, took off little Alba´s clothes and put them skin to skin. She was
about ten minutes old. This is the first time I´ve had the chance to do
this because every hospital I attend has the policy of having the baby
in the nursery while mom is being stitched up and watched after a c-section.
It was an amazing experience for me to watch how the little began doing
all the right things on dad´s chest: the eyes searching for the eyes,
the toungue movements, the kneading with the fists, and finally the
rooting. At this time, one hour and ten minutes after delivery, the mom
was brought bak into the room - and Alba was ready. We passed her from
dad´s chest to mom´s breast and, after expressing her emotions with a
few cries, little Alba was latched and nursing. One hour and twenty two
minutes after birth.
So she started on dad and ended on mom, and lost no time crying in a
nursery crib in between. I got this all on their video camera and I´m
hoping to put it together to show moms - and hospitals.

Good day to all!
Kika
