Just had a nurse ask me when we have to supplement (cup feed) a baby at 4 or 6 hours. I showed her that we don't have a policy on routinely supplementing after a certain time. It was a case of a mom being gone to OR for much longer than expected. So we had no colostrum to use.
I told them to observe and report any signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia to the MD, and put baby skin to skin to breastfeed as soon as mom returns from OR.

Does anyone have any research citations that show how long a baby can go without being fed?
