Postpartum Depression May Affect Newborn's Growth

By C. Vidyashankar, MD DELHI

(Reuters Health) - Newborns whose mothers become depressed within the first
six weeks after delivery may grow and develop more slowly than other babies,
according to a study conducted in Goa, India. ...The odds for poor
development in the study group remained even after accounting for other
factors that can affect development, such as birth weight and maternal
education, they add. "Depressed mothers are less interested in their babies,
and thus are less likely to exclusively breast feed their babies, which leads
to use of milk substitutes and, consequently, poorer growth," Patel said in
an E-mail interview with Reuters Health.
